We put girls centre stage
Because of the proximity of this community to the red light area, and their vulnerability as a result, it is a no-brainer that we take care of the girls first. Girls are also denied education most of the time; they are usually married off at an early age and often become housemaids. But, of course, we primarily focus on girls because they are the mothers of the next generation.
We like to keep things simple, so we have identified key 4 areas which we believe will most effectively help us to achieve our goals.

Area 1: educate her parents
The parents need to understand why their children should go to school instead of work and set the right example. By educating the parents on the necessity of education, health and nutrition we can help them provide the best care for their children, and by equipping them with a skill they can earn an income and better support their family, so the children don't have to work and can be free to learn.

Area 2: educate her
For the girls and their brothers a good education is a necessity if they want to get a well paid job, so we send the children to excellent schools where they can learn to read and write in English, until they have at least finished high school. With this level of education they can one day earn a 'middle class' wage.

Area 3: find an alternative source of family income
The community's economy relies too greatly upon making and selling cane baskets, and because many of the women do not work the money coming into the area remains at a bare minimum; we find suitable work for the mothers to increase the household’s earning power. Have a look here to see which projects the mothers are currently working on.

Area 4: improve her living circumstances
The living conditions in the slums are generally very bad; there is no access to clean drinking water, medical facilities, medicines or often even shoes. This means that all the inhabitants are living below the poverty threshold. We focus on facilities to improve their health and quality of life substantially; we aim to have a full time doctor and dentist working within the community and two social workers on site to identify issues for us, and offer psychological support to the families.
